General Information for Applicants
The Department of History at the Masaryk University’s Faculty of Arts offers three types of accredited degree programmes based on ECTS credits. Bachelor’s degree programmes - title Bc.; Master’s degree programmes - title Mgr. and doctoral degree programmes - title PhD.
The aim of the Bachelor’s degree program is to get students acquainted with the main issues and methods of the history research from the Early Middle Ages to the 20th century. The core of the studies lies in completing courses and passing the examinations in these four parts: history of the Middle Ages, the Early Modern Ages, the 19th century and the 20th century.
The department offers two types of Bachelor’s degree program: on-site and distance models of study (extra-mural studies).
Master’s degree program is designed as a study allowing the narrower specialization of each student, particularly regarding the writing and the defence of the Master’s thesis.
Doctoral studies are aimed at those interested in higher professional qualification, who would like to become specialists in scientific research or higher education. There is also the possibility of choice between on-site and distance models of study. The studies are primarily aimed on working on dissertation project.
In addition to these studies, our department also offers specialised Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in History for future teachers.
In general, we try to provide our students with an environment suitable for knowledge acquisition and development, particularly in Czech and general history. Mastering factual subject matters is closely connected with the future individual work with literature and primary sources and their interpretation. The Teachers Training specialisation makes it possible to develop these skills in different historical disciplines and modern approaches to the history research. Students are enabled to shape their study according to their future professional direction.
The Department of History at Masaryk University’s Faculty of Arts belongs among the leading historical departments in the Czech Republic. This department earned its good reputation mostly by research projects, completed grants and the regular high number of successful students in national competitions as well as the long-term high number of applicants compared to other subjects and other departments of history.
Characteristics of applicants
The study of history is intended for those interested in history and those interested in humanities in general. Moreover, is suitable as a second subject for those interested not only in humanities but also in more specialised subjects, because its wide scope presumes the absorption and development of wider knowledge of Arts.
